There’s Gotta Be a Better Way

Hi. Zach Vinson here.

The why behind Strategy Friends is personal to me, so it felt right to put this in the 1st person.

I deeply enjoy doing strategy work, and it’s something I have a knack for.

But it’s only one part of who I am. I’m also a musician and artist. I’m a husband, and a father to an amazing son who has special needs. I’m an avid reader. And I love a good basketball game.

Your life is probably a similarly unique combination of things.

Our world too often equates “where you work” with “who you are,” and deep down I don’t think that sits right with any of us.

So that got me thinking.

How can I build something that provides better results for clients, AND doesn’t require my work to become my entire life?

Strategy Friends is my attempt to answer that question.

Marketing Agencies Are Broken

I don’t mean agencies are full of slimy people or trying to rip you off.

But the agency’s goal is to grow the agency. Volume, volume, volume.

The result?

  • Most client work is done by inexperienced people
  • Dummy-proofed processes take priority over strategy, insight,  creativity, and analysis
  • Staff turnover is high

Again, this isn’t because they’re terrible people–it’s just what they need to do to stay profitable and grow their business.

The expensive hourly rates and retainers aren’t paying for expertise.

They’re paying for rent, executive salaries, and sales commissions. 3 things that don’t help you one bit.

Again, there’s gotta be a better way.

The Way Up Is the Way Down

Our goal is to stay small, and that changes everything.

Quality over quantity.

Do incredible work for a handful of clients.

Ditch the overhead. Stay lean and nimble.

With that approach, we can bring in super talented Friends to work on your project.

And that means your money is going towards better talent instead of agency overhead.

What We Believe About Marketing

Marketing gets a bad rap.

It’s often viewed as a way that people get tricked into buying something they don’t need.

And that rings true, sometimes, doesn’t it?

Here’s how we solve that.

We only work with clients who are doing amazing things.

That’s because marketing, at its best, isn’t about duping people into buying something they don’t need. It’s telling the truth about something great that’s already happening—plugging that greatness into a guitar amp and cranking the dials until the right audience hears it and wants more.

At Strategy Friends, we have zero desire to convince the world that something mediocre is actually great. We also have zero desire to collect a paycheck from a client who we don’t think we can help.

Why? because winning is fun, and so is integrity 🙂.

But if you’re doing amazing things, and we believe we can help, we’d love to talk.
